The Bachelors, An Update, and Wrapping Up

Hokay so, I quit smoking and it’s been quite an adventure over these last nine weeks!

I used the patch, lollipops, identifying triggers, and setting myself up for as much success as possible.

I also identified sensitivity (and possibly allergies to) the nicotine in the cigarettes and within the patches themselves. While my migraine frequency is reduced, their intensity was so much worse and I ended up working from home over the majority of the last 3-4 weeks. Ugh.

B3 and I are still going strong… It will be three months this week and we’re not quite sure how we might be celebrating either that or the fact his birthday arrives this week, too.

Which brings me to this: I think it’s safe to say I won’t be out in the dating world anytime soon and my duties as an OK Cupid moderator have fallen off significantly. While I haven’t deleted my profile there and across other dating sites yet, they will be taken down after a check-in and a discussion with my new beau.

I have appreciated everyone’s interest and readership during the ups and downs of my dating adventures.

If interested in other aspects of my life (some of which I’ve touched on here such as my affections for sci-fi, various fandoms I follow, interest in social justice and politics, and learning how not to be an asshole), I’ll be reaching out to you soon.

<3 Me.

Wait… Wat. O_o

So let me get this straight: Non-theists should just go to church anyway because a theist thinks “it’s the right thing to do”?

This kind of logic… It burnses!

Steubenville’s Jane Doe asked people to do something…

fuckyeahfeminists:

createourownlight:

I’ve never asked anyone to reblog anything before, and I probably won’t again. But I am now - because this matters.

The Steubenville rape victim, when offered money for her legal expenses or counselling, asked that people donated to a shelter for abused women and children in her county,  Madden House, instead.

Her attorney spoke in a local news article on why the family wanted this, and said they hope very much that “the attention … can help other people that have been victimized by this type of crime,” Fitzsimmons said, “and give them some strength and some assurance that people are there to help them when that happens.”

You can donate as little as $2 via your Paypal account to Madden House. (You can also navigate their website from that link, to be sure it’s a charity you can also believe in.) When I donated back in January, they had a message up that said, “Every single cent says, ‘We believe you, and we care.’” They had to remove it almost at once. I’m sure you can deduce the reasons why, in a case where even her status as “victim” was challenged before the trial.

Madden House and the Family Violence Project helps anyone, men included, but they have a strong focus on families, and on low-income women, especially those from the African-American population.

The best way to show you support Jane Doe is to make a donation, however small and leave a Paypal note when you do saying “In the name of Jane Doe, Steubenville.” They are telling her how many people donate in her name so it’s a direct way of letting her know. Even if all you can afford is a dollar, a thousand Tumblr users donating that is a thousand dollars for abuse victims. And it’s also a thousand people telling her directly that they, unlike the likes of CNN and her erstwhile “friends”, care about her, support her, and believe in her. It’s what she has actually asked people to do. In a case where she has been so effectively silenced and sidelined, I think acknowledging she’s been heard is particularly important.

SendGrid Fires Company Evangelist After Twitter Fracas
Trigger Warning: Rape, Physical Assault
My heart and my support go out to Adria.
Also, my righteous anger.
Here’s the gist of what happened. Adria was at PyCon, a developer conference, and noticed that two men behind her were making lewd sexual jokes. She snapped a photo, tweeted it, brought up the behavior to PyCon officials (since they did have a code of conduct for their conference), and the situation was “handled”.
What’s happened after that is a prime example of why women and people of color (and women of color, of course) are few and far between in the world of tech.
One of the men making the jokes, who was there representing his employer, got fired for his actions. Adria’s website starts getting DDoS attacks, as does her employer’s website. People are leaving her nasty comments and she’s been getting death threats and rape threats tweeted to her since yesterday.
Today, SendGrid fired Adria. And they didn’t just fire her, but they announced it on Twitter and on Facebook so people could spread the word and comment on it. The Facebook comments are particularly vile, including one where a man details a particularly gruesome threat against Adria, concluded with the words “Make her pay. Make her obey.”
All of this for speaking up about something which made her uncomfortable.

To say that this is problematic would be an understatement, and it’s particularly troubling in a week when we’ve already seen two high-profile (and altogether disturbing) responses to sexual assault cases capture media headlines. We can’t figure out what possible justification SendGrid  thinks they have for terminating Adria — and don’t even get us started on how they handled it — but if you’re as curious as we are then here’s SendGrid’s contact information.

Inexcusable.

Nope.  Make some noise, people.  This is not.  okay.

Arkansas to Increase ‘Conscience’ Protections, Add Telemed Ban
The men in the Arkansas legislature seemed really concerned with making sure people give birth if they’re having sex.

Forget employment, let’s just work on increasing the population instead! And not by the choice of the people!

HELL NO
Planned Parenthood is the ONLY medical resource I have. It was there for me when I got herpes, it was there for me any time I got a vaginal infection, it was there for me for my yearly wellness exam, it was there for me when I needed testing, and it’s there for me to get me my birth control that not only keeps me from getting pregnant (and needing an abortion) it keeps me from having hellish periods that keep me from functioning for half of every month.
They want to take away my only medical resource.
If you live in arkansas (or even if you don’t) here’s what you can do:

If you’re near Fayetteville there is a meeting this Friday, 3/15, at 10:00 a.m. at Panera to discuss things we can do. You may see me there so if nothing else just come give FYSE a hug and tell them it’ll all be okay.

Sir Patrick Stewart: ‘Violence Against Women Is Learned’

The truth is that domestic violence and violence against women touch many of us. This violence is not a private matter. Behind closed doors it is shielded and hidden and it only intensifies. It is protected by silence – everyone’s silence. Violence against women is learned. Each of us must examine - and change - the ways in which our own behavior might contribute to, enable, ignore or excuse all such forms of violence. I promise to do so, and to invite other men and allies to do the same.

I love this man. My dad raised me to be a Trekkie watching him & Captain Janeway growing up. Between this and Miss Grotke from Recess I was a budding feminist and I didn’t even know it. :’)
